An Evening of Sonatas with Duo IRI, at DiMenna Center (Site)

Saturday October 7, 2017, 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

$15 – $20

Performers
Audrey Vardanega, Piano
Maya Ramchandran, Violin

duo IRI present a breakdown of the traditional recital form by using a program structure that encourages the discussion of new ideas while taking in Classical music. Each work performed will be interspersed with breaks in which the performers will speak about topics including the function of music as an outlet for the composers to express their individual experiences of conflict, and more broadly why classical music and performance remains so relevant in today’s world. The program includes Brahms’ 3rd Violin sonata, Messaien Theme and Variations, and Beethoven’s 10th Violin Sonata. These pieces are carefully chosen because they represent different and complementary aspects of the concept of conflict and the value of expressing it through art. The beauty of these pieces lies in their emotional vulnerability, changeability, and ultimate hope. Whether the hurdle is physical, social, or emotional, all of these composers find a way to harness their energy to produce music so powerful that it remains applicable hundreds of years after its conception. We believe that such a program is particularly relevant given the current political environment in this country, and can spark important discussions about the power of honest expression in contributing to social conscience, empathy, and awareness. Throughout the event, the audience is encouraged to contribute their ideas, ask questions, and talk
to the performers more informally about anything that interests them.
