Join once again at Scandanavia House for a recital program of beautiful music for cello and piano, performed by Koussevitsky Young Artist Competition First Prize Winner, William Suh and accompanied by Luis Ortiz.

The performance will be followed by a free reception and a chance to speak with the artists!

Artist Bios

William Suh (Cello)

Cellist William Suh has been acclaimed for his engaging musicianship, dynamically colored playing and artistic sincerity. A recipient of the Aldo Parisot Prize and the Broadus Erle Prize at the Yale School of Music, Suh was awarded first prizes at the 57th Serge & Olga Koussevitzky Young Artist Awards by the Musicians Club of New York, the 50th Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition, New England Conservatory Concerto Competition, Music Teachers National Association String Competition and the Aspen Music Festival Concerto Competition. Suh also holds top prizes from the New York International Artists Association and Hellam Young Artist competitions. Recent performance highlights feature solo appearances at Jordan Hall with the New England Conservatory Symphony and Maestro Hugh Wolff, Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Aspen Music Festival’s Klein Music Tent with the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra, and the Paesaggi Musicali Toscani festival in Val d’Orcia, Italy.

As a chamber musician, Suh has had the privilege of collaborating and performing with artists including Augustin Hadelich, Inon Barnatan, Phillip Ying, and the late Roger Tapping. Suh’s chamber festival appearances include the Chamber Music Workshop of the Perlman Music Program, the Fellowship Program of the Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival; he has also worked with members of the Cleveland, Emerson, Guarneri, Juilliard, & Tokyo string quartets and the Weilerstein trio. Suh’s formative years of study were through the Perlman Music Program’s Summer Music School and its Suncoast Winter Residency, where he studied under Astrid Schween, Clara Kim and Zvi Plesser.

Suh commenced his studies with the late Andrew Eckard, former associate principal of the Honolulu Symphony, and Dr. Jonas Carlson. As a recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Artist Award, Suh’s performances have been featured on National Public Radio, WQXR and Hawaii Public Radio stations. The grand prize winner of the Stover Memorial Instrumental Competition, Suh was a finalist in the Stulberg International and Mondavi National string competitions, performed as a featured soloist with the Antelope Valley Symphony, Kamuela Philharmonic and Oahu Civic Orchestra, and appeared in masterclasses for Marc Coppey, Frans Helmerson, Steven Isserlis, Laurence Lesser, and Truls Mørk.

Suh is an Artist Diploma candidate at The Juilliard School. He holds degrees from the Yale School of Music (M.M., M.M.A.), the New England Conservatory (B.M. with honors), and is a graduate of the Colburn Music Academy. Current and former principal teachers include Joel Krosnick, Paul Watkins, Paul Katz and Clive Greensmith. An advocate for the democratization of music education, Suh manages technical operations for CelloBello. He performs on a 1913 cello by Carl Becker Sr. provided by a generous loan from the Colburn Collection.

 

Luis Ortiz (Piano)

Pianist Luis F. Ortiz made his international debut with a 2010 recital in Miraflores, Peru. Winner of the Round Top International Festival Concerto Competition, the New England Philharmonic Young Artists Competition and others, Mr. Ortiz holds an M.M. in Collaborative Piano from The Juilliard School, a B.M. in Piano Performance from The Eastman School of Music, a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Rochester, and is a graduate of Phillips Academy Andover. He has most recently performed as a guest artist at the Hidden Valley Seminar and has joined the faculty of the Perlman Music Program. Mr. Ortiz performs frequently around New York City and is currently working as a studio pianist at the Juilliard School.
