Classic FM named Turkish cellist Jamal Aliyev among their “30 of the most brilliant young classical musicians playing today” in 2021.
The charismatic 28-year-old makes his NYC mainstage debut with this duo concert with the astounding pianist Fazıl Say. Their program features the gorgeous Franck Sonata for Violin and Piano in its much-loved cello arrangement, Schubert’s “Arpeggione” sonata, and the pianist’s own Four Cities sonata, which Say introduces as “a journey through four cities in Anatolia.” The vibrant, sweeping, dance-filled work is rich with nods to Turkish folk music, with the cello evoking traditional Turkish instruments. It’s a brilliant reflection of Say’s ability to meld influences and create something thrillingly new.
