Improvising Chopin at Tenri Culture Institute
Saturday March 18, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm$20
Musicians, students, and audiences are frequently amazed to learn that the rich, structured original harmonic styles created by Frédéric François Chopin – born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin (1810–1849) – are based on improvisation. Chopin here further realized a new vocabulary of pedaling, sonorities—fine details of sound and structured performance physicality. Chopin himself insisted his music was best suited for small spaces. A lot of this music seemed out of place in large concert halls for him—he only gave 30 (or less) performances—matching acoustic properties of the “sound space” in playing. He claimed that the sonic qualities of his performance space shared important partnership to the sound qualities and creative perspective on the piano itself.
