Then and Now, Concert by underStaffed at Bohemian National Hall (Site)

Tuesday April 4, 2023, 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

$20

Experience three centuries of string orchestra repertoire with this special performance by underStaffed, an emerging New York area musical ensemble conducted by Elliot Roman.

Come hear the introspective and contemplative melodies in up-and-coming Israeli composer Shahar Regev’s “New Horizon” (2020) immediately followed by Czech composer and Dvořák’s student turned son-in-law Josef Suk’s early, yet musically mature “Serenade for Strings” (1892). After the intermission, the ensemble will perform “Concerto Grosso No. 1” (1925) by Swiss-American Jewish composer Ernest Bloch, whose piece scored for strings with piano obbligato harkens back to the older baroque concerto grosso form.

underStaffed is a 501c3 nonprofit collective of emerging musicians from the New York Metropolitan Area dedicated to the performance of works for chamber orchestra and small ensembles. underStaffed aims to perform in both conventional and unconventional venues, hoping to bring classical music to those who might not be as familiar with the genre. underStaffed also makes an effort to regularly program works by lesser-known creators, including both historically overlooked composers as well as up-and-coming contemporary composers.

Suggested donation $20.

The event is organized by the Society for the History of Czechoslovak Jews with support of the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association.
