“The Circus” (1928) plus 100th Anniversary Screening: “The Bond” (1918)

Produced after his legendary classic, THE GOLD RUSH (1925) and before his triumphant masterpiece, CITY LIGHTS (1931) – THE CIRCUS (1928), while a comparable critical and commercial success when first released, was purposely relegated to the vault for 40 years by its creator. This was thanks to memories of great personal turmoil at the time, as well as a series of disasters that befell the production while Chaplin willed the picture into being in fits and starts and that no world recognition (or special Oscar statuette) could erase. The film is possibly Chaplin’s purest and most delectable “Tramp” feature and decidedly belongs in the pantheon with its siblings. Our added attraction: Chaplin’s appeal for the Allied cause during WWI, THE BOND (1918).

THE CIRCUS will pe presented with Chaplin’s own musical score, which he composed and recorded (with an orchestra) in 1968 to accompany the film; THE BOND will have live piano accompaniment by Ben Model.
