FREE WORKSHOP / PIANO RECITAL

Music doesn't always have to played from a printed score! In this hour of music presentation, Two Bridges Music piano faculty Joey Chang will talk about and perform solo piano improvisations based on suggestions from the audience!

Joey Chang has worked in collaborative improvisation, working in languages of freeform jazz, baroque style improvisation, to collaborative improvisation with dancers, visual artists, and writers. He has performed improvisation around NYC, with larger venues including Juilliard and the Stone at the New School.

About Joey Chang:
Concert pianist Joey (Ian-Joe) Chang, a second-year Masters at the Juilliard School, was the youngest top-prize winner of the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition in 2009 and has garnered awards and recognition from local competitions as well as international competitions, including International Russian Music Piano Competition, New Orleans International Young artist and Schimmel International Junior. At Juilliard, Joey was the 2nd-place winner in the 2015 piano concerto competition, 3rd place winner of the 2016 Munz scholarship, and a finalist of the 2016 and 2017 Gina Bachauer scholarship competitions. An avid composer and improviser, Joey began to compose at 6 and performed his first original work in the Yamaha USA national “Junior Original Composer” concert at age 7. He has since composed music for solo piano and small ensemble, premiered at Juilliard’s Double Vision concert series. Following an improvisation residency at the Banff Centre, Joey has worked extensively in performing free improvisation with musicians and dancers, presenting and organizing improvisation sessions across NYC. A passionate believer in musical advocacy and outreach, Joey is a member of and has participated in educational programs run by organizations like ASTEP and Sing-For-Hope based in New York. In the summer of 2015, Joey spent 6-weeks in Taiwan, including two weeks of living and teaching in Taiwanese Bunun aboriginal descendant communities, and his trip culminated in a concert of original compositions and improvisations based on his experiences in Taiwan.Joey began private piano lessons with Dr. Tehling Chiang and studied under Professor Robert Hamilton at Arizona State University at age 13. He is currently under the tutelage of Professor Jerome Lowenthal.

ABOUT THE TWO BRIDGES MUSIC PROGRAM:
Two Bridges Music continues its series of music concerts and performances, free and open to the public. On a regular basis Two Bridges Music invites professional musicians of all styles and genres to perform for and share their talent with our local community.Two Bridges Music provides high quality music lessons at an accessible cost to students of all levels and ages. Lesson are offered to beginner and advanced students alike and we successfully prepare students for certifications and exams such as ABRSM. At Two Bridges Music we believe in exposing each student to the highest level of musicianship.
