To honor the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, two of his most dynamic early works are featured side-by-side and paired with a later revolutionary voice in Bartók’s epic Piano Quintet. Through these works, the twenty-something-year-old Beethoven is revealed as fully confident and in command of his muscular style, while Bartók looks back to a more opulent, romantic language that only hints at the modernist he would become.
Program
BEETHOVEN Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 11
BEETHOVEN String Quintet in Eb Major, Op. 4 (arr. Mordechai Rechtman for Clarinet and String Quartet)
BARTÓK Piano Quintet in C Major, BB 9
