On Sunday, October 14th, 2018, at 5 p.m. Emilie and I warmly invite you for the special sequel in CELEBRATION OF GRIEG AND HIS CIRCLE II, in tribute to 175th birthday anniversary of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) – one of the renowned Romantic composers whose integration of Norwegian folk music brought the music of Norway to international prominence. This Grieg-inspired program will feature some of the greatest, both celebrated and little-known, masterworks by Mendelssohn, Part, Schumann, Gade and Grieg. An Aquarian Genius, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), was known for his precocious talent, his innate gift for melodic lyricism, and his playful scherzando style, all on display in his charming Violin Sonata in F Major (1820) – the earliest of his three violin sonatas composed when Mendelssohn was just 11 years old, yet only discovered and published in the late 1970s. An Estonian composer of Classical and religious music, Arvo Part (b. 1935) adopted a Minimalist style that employs his self-invented compositional technique, tintinnabuli, which can be witnessed in his Fratres for violin and piano (1980) – one of his most celebrated works described as a “mesmerizing set of variations on a six-bar theme combining frantic activity and sublime stillness that encapsulates Part’s observation that ‘the instant and eternity are strugglin within us'” A great influence on Edvard Grieg, Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a leading German romantic composer, pianist and an important music critic. His impassioned Violin Sonata No. 1 in A minor, op. 105 (1851) is the most beloved and oft-played of his three violin sonatas which concludes with a tempestuous Lebhaft finale in breathless perpetual motion. It was given its official premiere by Clara Schumann and Ferdinand David, after which Clara wrote of it: “We played it and felt…moved by the highly elegiac first movement and the lovely second movement….” Dubbed as the “Danish Mendelssohn”, Niels Gade (1817-1890) was a Danish composer, conductor, violinist, organist, the teacher of Edvard Grieg and a friend of both Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann, considered to be the most important Danish musician of his day who was famous for his orchestral music yet largely overlooked for his equally worthy chamber music and piano works. Gade’s Fantasiestucke, op. 43 (1861), inspired by Schumann’s Fantasiestucke, op. 73 and originally scored for clarinet and piano, translate brilliantly for the violin and piano and include a poignant Ballade – a stylized version of a Nordic folktale. Our program will conclude with Grieg’s fiery Sonata No. 3 in C minor for piano and violin, op. 45 (1887) – his third and personal favorite violin sonata full of Norwegian folk melodies, harmonies and rhythms which, in Grieg’s own words, is “the one with the broader horizon” than his prior two violin sonatas. At the pinnacle of Grieg’s mastery, it stands alongside the sonatas of Brahms, Franck, and Strauss as one of the finest late Romantic violin sonatas of all time. Don’t miss this special musical journey in Celebration of Grieg and His Circle II !
