Lulu Gainsbourg: The ability to think musically and express oneself with notes, pauses and piano keys more than words: these things are the stuff of musical destiny. And Lulu Gainsbourg’s vocation suggests that of artists whose inner world is breathtakingly vast, who cultivate the art of musical painting and look for the resolution of each of their phrases in a moment of decision or suspension, an unresolved chord. If Lulu Gainsbourg inherited one thing from his father Serge, it was his affinity to the beauty of sound – almost an obsession with perfection, the need to communicate through creation and to be, as he said, “the reflection of a score”.

In 2011, Lulu Gainsbourg began his recording career with an album of covers. From Gainsbourg to Lulu was the sincere, eloquent title of this testimonial work.

Accompanied by the voices of Marianne Faithfull, Rufus Wainwright and Scarlett Johansson, it expressed love, expectation and a strange counterpoint between absence and silent presence. Released three years later, Lady Luck conjured up the image of a young man sitting at his piano, contemplating a painful breakup and composing the music for twelve original tracks featuring guest stars such as the actor Anne Hathaway or his childhood friend, the painter Ara Starck.

Since then, Lulu Gainsbourg has tirelessly forged ahead, explored, stepped back to take a better look, removed layers and studied the perspective of his musical canvas for as long as it takes to write themes he perceives as less and less vague, increasingly sharp. “I was still looking for my voice, my own way to sing and tell stories.” With a touch of humor, Lulu Gainsbourg used a play on words as the title of his new album. «T’es qui là», which means both «Who Are You There?» and «Tequila».

It finally expresses the full extent of his performing talents.
